Victoria Strengthens Support for Women Affected by FGM/C
12 Feb 2026
FGM/C is illegal in Australia and is recognised as a serious health and human rights issue. Despite this, it is estimated that around 120,000 migrant women in Australia have experienced the practice before arriving here.
Across Victoria, specialist health services, community groups and FARREP workers provide culturally safe and trauma-informed care. These services help women access medical treatment, counselling, education and prevention programs.
The African Women’s Clinic at the Royal Women’s Hospital is one example. Led by specialist nurses and midwives, the clinic offers support with sexual health, pregnancy care, counselling and de-infibulation when needed.
Health workers recently met at a national conference in Melbourne to strengthen skills and share best practice in caring for women and girls affected by FGM/C.
