Urgent Call for Blood Donors as Demand Hits Record High Amid Cancellations
09 Sep 2025
Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is urgently asking people to donate blood and help replenish critical supplies across the country.
The appeal comes as record-high demand for blood during winter coincides with many cancelled appointments and lower seasonal bookings. Lifeblood needs an extra 12,500 donors over the next week to ease pressure on blood and plasma supplies.
Data shows blood demand hit record levels in June, July, and August. This surge, combined with the highest appointment cancellations since the COVID-19 pandemic, has put multiple blood types under strain.
Stephen Cornelissen AM, Lifeblood CEO, said the combination of winter demand, cancellations, and lower bookings created a “perfect storm” for blood shortages.
“We usually see more cancellations in winter because of cold, flu, and COVID-19, but this winter has been particularly challenging,” he said.
“At the same time, we experienced our highest-ever winter demand for blood, which has seriously affected our supplies. We urge anyone who is eligible and feeling healthy to book a donation immediately. Every donation helps.”
Donors of all blood types are needed, and first-time donors are especially encouraged to come forward.
In Australia, a blood donation is needed every 18 seconds to support patients undergoing cancer treatment, major surgery, trauma care, pregnancy, childbirth, and other medical conditions. One donation can save up to three lives, and the process takes about an hour.
