Queenslanders Urged to Get Free Flu Vaccination Before Program Ends
Queensland Health is urging the community to get their free flu vaccine before the program ends on 30 September 2025, as flu continues to circulate widely across the state. Despite high infection rates, vaccination uptake has slowed.
Since the start of the year, 67,074 flu cases have been recorded in Queensland, with 86% of those not vaccinated. In the past week alone, 4,481 new cases were reported, with more infections among children under 18 in Central and Southeast Queensland.
Flu and other respiratory infections are placing pressure on hospitals. On average, 254 public hospital beds were occupied daily by flu patients last week. Combined with COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), nearly 400 beds are in use each day for respiratory illnesses.
Tragically, 146 people have died from flu-related illnesses this year, including 20 under the age of 65.
Chief Health Officer Dr Catherine McDougall emphasized the importance of vaccination:
-
Everyone aged 6 months and older is eligible for a free flu shot.
-
High-risk groups include children under 5, adults over 65, pregnant people, and those with chronic health conditions.
-
Vaccinations are available at GPs, pharmacies, community clinics, and councils, and can be given at the same time as a COVID-19 booster.
Other respiratory virus updates:
-
RSV: 890 cases reported last week; hospitalisations steady with an average of 61 beds occupied daily.
-
COVID-19: 892 cases reported last week; 82 hospital beds occupied daily on average.
Health authorities remind the public to practice good hygiene, stay home when sick, and ensure vaccinations are up to date, especially before travelling.
