Understanding the Different Ways Autism Can Present
24 Feb 2026
Medical clinicians may not immediately recognise when a patient walking into their clinic is autistic.
Grace Fava, CEO of the Autism Advisory and Support Service, explains that while some individuals show clear autistic traits, others may mask their behaviours. Masking can hide signs of autism until the person experiences high levels of stress or anxiety.
To help GPs better identify and support autistic patients, the Stronger Seeds, Taller Trees project has shared practical resources on:
-
What autism is
-
Masking behaviours
-
Stimming
-
Executive functioning
-
Sensory processing disorders
-
Sensory experiences
-
Anxiety and autism
-
Special interests
-
Easy-to-understand resources for families
-
Medical causes of aggression in autism
-
PGx screening, which may assist in medication decision-making
The project also provides guidance on early intervention, including when and how to refer children for further assessment.
Stronger Seeds, Taller Trees brings together professionals from government and non-government organisations across South Western Sydney. The group supports GPs in helping families navigate services and access timely care when concerns arise about a child’s development.
