The Hobart Clinic to Close Rokeby Inpatient Facility by October
The Hobart Clinic, a privately-run 27-bed mental health facility in Rokeby, has announced it will cease inpatient operations by 31 October 2025 due to financial pressures.
The decision, made by the Clinic’s Board, reflects the wider challenges facing privately-run health facilities across Australia.
While inpatient services will close, the Hobart Clinic will continue providing outpatient and group programs at its Mind Hub in Collins Street, Hobart.
What this means for clients
-
All current inpatients are expected to be discharged by mid-October, with transition plans in place.
-
Clients are encouraged to consult their treating health practitioner to discuss alternative options.
-
Tasmanian Health Services will ensure patients continue to receive the support they need.
Alternative supports available
-
Public services: Inpatient units at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Peacock Centre, Launceston General Hospital, and North West Regional Hospital.
-
Community services: Safe Haven, the Mental Health Integration Hub, and Medicare Mental Health Centres in Hobart and Launceston.
-
Crisis support: Lifeline (13 11 14) and Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 467).
Staff transition
The Department of Health is working with The Hobart Clinic to support affected staff, including access to other health service roles.
Government investment
Since 2021, the Tasmanian Government has provided $6.8 million in financial support to help the clinic remain operational. Despite this, falling patient demand and rising costs have made the inpatient facility financially unviable.
The government is continuing to expand new community-based and inpatient mental health facilities across Tasmania, including additional beds in Hobart, Launceston, and the North West.
