TGA Warns Against Fake Melatonin Products
30 Jan 2026
The TGA says this variation in melatonin levels is dangerous, particularly for children, and could lead to accidental overdoses and hospital visits.
Health professionals are encouraged to warn patients about unregistered melatonin and report any adverse reactions.
Last year, the TGA tested 18 imported melatonin products seized at the border. More than half did not match the labelled content.
The warning comes after an ABC investigation found that in 2024 there were 1478 calls to the poisons hotline about melatonin exposure in children aged 14 and under. Following these concerns, the American website iHerb has stopped selling melatonin to Australia.
The TGA reminds the public that melatonin is a prescription-only medicine, except in limited cases for adults. Products taken without a doctor’s guidance can cause serious side effects.
“Stop using unregistered melatonin products immediately and return any leftover items to your local pharmacy for safe disposal,” the TGA said.
“If you have concerns about using these products, speak to your GP or medical practitioner.”
