Tasmanian community urged to be on alert for recalled poppy seed

As a precaution, Public Health Services advises people in Tasmania to check they do not have the following product in their kitchen:

  • 'Royal Fields Poppy Seeds' (Basfoods), with a best before date of 25 June 2024.

This product was previously recalled in November 2022.

This product is not safe to consume and anyone who has purchased this recalled batch of poppy seeds should throw it out or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone who is concerned about consumption to the recalled product should call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. Public Health Services advises anyone who has consumed the recalled poppy seeds, especially in large quantities such as a drink, and experiences unusual and severe symptoms should seek immediate medical attention by visiting their nearest emergency department. In the event of an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

Reported symptoms occur minutes to hours after consumption and can be severe, including:

  • severe muscle cramping, muscle spasms, abnormal movements or unsteady walking
  • seizures
  • racing heart rate, sweating
  • cardiac arrest.
