Tasmania Seeks Community Input for Next Mental Health Strategy
10 Nov 2025
This initiative aims to build on the progress of Rethink 2020 and ensure Tasmania’s mental health system continues to meet community needs, aligns with national priorities, and is guided by the experiences of people with lived experience.
Since the launch of Rethink 2020, the Department has worked closely with the Mental Health Council of Tasmania, Primary Health Tasmania, community partners, and individuals with lived experience to implement key initiatives. Achievements include:
-
The opening of the Peacock Centre in North Hobart
-
Launch of the Mental Health Emergency Response Service
-
Piloting the Youth Mental Health Hospital in the Home service in the North West, now expanded to 12 beds
A report marking the conclusion of Rethink 2020 celebrates a decade of reforms and transformations across Tasmania’s mental health system.
The new strategy, Rethink and Beyond, will be informed by an independent evaluation of Rethink 2020 and extensive input from the community and sector stakeholders. Consultations began last month with a Stakeholder Roundtable, bringing together people with lived experience, community organisations, government agencies, and service partners. Discussions focused on priorities including lived experience leadership, system integration, prevention, regional equity, workforce development, and tackling stigma.
Insights from these discussions will guide further consultation activities, including stakeholder roundtables, focus groups, advisory groups, and online feedback opportunities, ensuring Tasmanians have a say in shaping the future of the State’s mental health services.
