Tasmania on track to deliver epic health transformation

27 May 2025

The Department of Health’s $476 million Digital Health Transformation Strategy has entered its next exciting stage – now known as the Bluegum Health Transformation, named after our state’s floral emblem.

Over the past two and a half years, the Digital Health Transformation Program has successfully delivered the first stage of this strategy. During that time, important systems have been upgraded and new tools embedded to improve the way healthcare is delivered across Tasmania.

Foundational work has included upgrades to digital infrastructure and expanded public Wi-Fi, which are key steps toward enabling virtual care, especially in rural and remote areas.

The Bluegum Health Transformationwill now shape the future of Tasmanian healthcare, focused on delivering system-wide change.

This transformation will prioritise more connected, person-centred care and modern digital infrastructure, with a major enabler being the introduction of a statewide Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

The extensive procurement process highlighted the wide range of solutions available on the market and reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to selecting a world-class system that meets the needs of Tasmanians now and into the future.

Following a rigorous and detailed procurement process, Epic Systems has been named the preferred EMR vendor, and contract negotiations are now underway. Assuming we can reach a mutually agreeable contract position, we hope to begin building an ‘epic’ new EMR solution for Tasmania in May 2026.
