Supporting Tasmanian children to boost literacy development
29 Sep 2025
Launched in July, the ‘Kids Love to Learn’ assessment is a 60-minute appointment available for every child at 18 months of age. Delivered by Child Health and Parenting Service (CHaPS) nurses at 70 community locations statewide, the program focuses on literacy development through the child–caregiver relationship, recognising the vital role parents and carers play as a child’s first teacher.
Parents and carers are encouraged to book the new literacy assessment in addition to the existing schedule of CHaPS health checks offered at key developmental milestones, including:
-
2 weeks
-
4 weeks
-
8 weeks
-
6 months
-
12 months
-
2 years
-
4 years
As with all CHaPS appointments, the 18-month assessment also includes growth and developmental screening, and provides an opportunity for parents to raise any concerns.
Nursing Director of CHaPS, Trudi Steedman, said the program supports both children and families. “This assessment highlights the importance of literacy in a child’s early development and gives parents practical ways to build those skills at home.”
Parents such as Ellen Reyes, who attended the assessment with her daughter Phoebe, welcomed the new approach. Nurse Unit Manager Gabby Bakes said the literacy focus complements the existing developmental support CHaPS provides to Tasmanian families.
