Stay Safe in Victoria’s Scorching Summer Heat

05 Jan 2026

“Extreme heat can become dangerous very quickly,” said Dr Caroline McElnay, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer.

Here are some practical tips to keep safe during hot weather:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly, even before you feel thirsty, especially if you’re outdoors or physically active. Look out for dehydration signs such as lightheadedness, dry mouth, fatigue, dark or strong-smelling urine, or urinating less than usual. If your doctor has advised limiting fluids, check how much you should drink on hot days.

  • Keep cool: Use air conditioning or fans, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, keep skin damp with a spray bottle or cool sponge, and take cool showers or foot baths.

  • Protect your home: Close blinds or curtains to block the heat. If you need to go out, spend time in air-conditioned buildings or other cool spaces.

  • Plan your day: Avoid outdoor work or exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Check the Bureau of Meteorology for heatwave warnings and forecasts.

  • Check on others: “A quick call can make a big difference,” said Dr McElnay. Make sure older people, babies and young children, pregnant women, people with health conditions, socially isolated individuals, and those without easy ways to stay cool are coping well in the heat.
