Scholarship winner leads the way in strengthening culture in Indigenous healthcare

Myles McKenzie, a 24-year-old medical student at James Cook University, has been awarded the 2025 AMA Indigenous Medical Scholarship and is determined to become a psychiatrist to help close the gap in mental health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Myles says his passion grew from listening to stories shared at his local men’s group, where many Aboriginal men spoke about their struggles with mental health, crime, and rehabilitation. Through these conversations, he saw how systemic issues – like limited access to mental health services, lack of early intervention in domestic violence, and fewer opportunities in education and employment – continue to impact Indigenous communities.

Now in his third year of medicine, Myles hopes to use psychiatry to improve support and outcomes for his community.
