Royal Hobart Hospital trauma specialists undertake paediatric training

Chief Executive – Hospitals South, Joe McDonald, welcomed the visitors from Victoria and the skills, knowledge, and insight they have passed onto the trauma team at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

“The Royal Hobart Hospital’s Trauma Service is a critically important unit that contains doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and other support staff who save lives and provide care for all Tasmanians who have been involved in a traumatic incident,” Mr McDonald said.
“Major trauma cases can cause serious injuries that have the potential to result in prolonged disability or death, including through blunt or penetrating force. The two most common categories of trauma cases in Tasmania are falls and transport-related incidents.
“Generally, we receive around 20 major trauma paediatric patients and around 100 minor cases per year, so this week’s visit has been a fantastic opportunity for our staff to speak directly with nation-leading trauma specialists from a major children’s hospital and build on their knowledge to save and care for our most vulnerable Tasmanians.

“Our staff have undertaken a full day of Trauma Team Training involving simulation activities to learn new skills and contemporary practices specifically related to paediatric cases to add to their highly specialised skillset.
“We are committed to supporting our staff to grow and expand their training in order to provide the highest quality care to their patients, and we thank the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) for providing the grant and the opportunity for this training,” Mr McDonald said.
