Respiratory illness support made easier for Tasmanians through Care@home

Respiratory illness support made easier for Tasmanians through Care@home

03 Sep 2025

Winter may be over, but COVID-19, the flu and other respiratory illnesses are still spreading in the community. Tasmanians are being reminded to choose the right care option for their health needs – to make sure they get the best support and to help ease pressure on busy hospitals.

Care@home is a free virtual care service available 24/7 for people with COVID-19, influenza or other respiratory illnesses. The service allows you to receive professional care and support from doctors, nurses and allied health staff without leaving your home.

If you are at higher risk of severe illness, have breathing-related symptoms, and cannot see your regular GP, you can call the Care@home team on 1800 973 363 any time of the day or night to discuss your options.

Health authorities stress that anyone needing urgent medical help should always call Triple Zero (000) or go to the nearest emergency department.

For non-emergency care, other options are also available:

  • Medicare Urgent Care Clinics – five across Tasmania (Hobart, Bridgewater, Launceston and Devonport), open seven days a week for bulk-billed urgent care without needing an appointment.

  • GP clinics – for non-urgent, ongoing and preventative healthcare.

  • Pharmacies – for prescriptions, vaccinations and help with minor illnesses.

  • healthdirect – call 1800 022 222 anytime to speak to a registered nurse who can guide you to the right local service.
