RACGP Seeks IMG Representative to Strengthen Future Governance

11 Dec 2025

The RACGP is inviting overseas-trained doctors to contribute directly to the organisation’s long-term direction, with a new position for an international medical graduate (IMG) being added to its Future Governance Committee.

From 2026, the committee will include one RACGP Fellow who is also an IMG, provided the applicant has never served as a college director. Interested members can submit an expression of interest via the RACGP website, with applications closing 12 January.

Established in 2025, the Future Governance Committee plays an essential advisory role, helping guide the RACGP Board on how the college’s governance structure can remain effective, representative and supportive of modern general practice. Expanding the committee ensures a broader range of viewpoints as it enters a new co-design phase with members.

Committee Chair and Board Member Dr Siân Goodson said the addition of an IMG representative is both timely and necessary.

“More than half of Australia’s general practitioners completed their training overseas, so it’s vital that their experiences and perspectives help inform how we shape our governance for the future.”

Dr Goodson noted that the role is best suited to someone with a familiarity or background in governance.

“They might have participated in board work, contributed to committees, or played a role in organisational decision-making. We’re looking for someone who understands how governance functions and who can offer that insight to the committee.”

She added that the position offers both contribution and growth:

“It’s a great chance to collaborate with other committee members, gain a deeper understanding of how the college operates, and help build a governance model that will support the profession for years to come.”

The announcement follows a strong year for the committee, with all special resolutions successfully approved at the recent Annual General Meeting.

“That success was the result of extensive member engagement and careful planning,” Dr Goodson said. “The new IMG member will bring fresh insight as we continue consultation and progress the next stage of our governance review.”
