Queensland respiratory infections update – 19 September 2025
19 Sep 2025
While overall influenza numbers are declining, Central Queensland continues to see rising cases, reflecting ongoing regional variations. Hospitalisations are also trending down, with an average of 208 hospital beds occupied by flu patients last week, a 12 per cent decrease from the previous week.
Chief Health Officer Dr Catherine McDougall urged Queenslanders to get vaccinated before the free flu program ends on 30 September.
“Flu activity remains elevated, and 79 per cent of those hospitalised this year were not vaccinated,” Dr McDougall said. “Vaccination is still our best defence. It’s quick, free, and safe, especially for pregnant people, children under five, and adults over 65.”
Last week, more than 300 public hospital beds were occupied daily on average by patients with influenza, COVID-19, or RSV, although demand is beginning to ease.
Queenslanders can access free flu vaccinations at over 2,500 community providers, including GPs, pharmacies, and clinics. COVID-19 vaccinations can be administered at the same time.
Other respiratory infection updates:
-
RSV: 848 new cases last week, total 27,527 cases this year; hospitalisations are declining.
-
COVID-19: 670 new cases last week, total 33,073 cases this year; most hospitalised patients were not up to date with vaccination.
Queenslanders are encouraged to stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Free RSV vaccination is available for expectant mothers (weeks 28–36) and some infants.
