Protect yourself against mosquitoes
27 Jul 2023
Make sure you’re protected against Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) by covering up and getting vaccinated. JEV is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
There are 2 ways to prevent JEV:
- avoid being bitten by mosquitoes
- vaccination.
Follow these top tips to protect yourself against mosquito bites:
- Wear protective-light coloured clothing with long sleeves, long trousers
- Avoid outdoor exposure near wetlands and flooded areas, especially after sundown
- Use a protective repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalypt (PMD) and other mosquito protection devices. Gels and creams last longer than aerosols
- Ensure infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites
- Consider insecticide barrier treatments by pest control companies for use around residential grounds
- Ensure windows and doors have screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering houses.
