Proposed new title for podiatric surgeons
10 Oct 2025
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has welcomed Ahpra’s decision to change the title of “podiatric surgeon” to “surgical podiatrist,” effective from 5 October 2026.
While Ahpra and the Podiatry Board of Australia say the new title will provide greater clarity for the public, the AMA is concerned that patients could still mistake surgical podiatrists for medical doctors, as the term “surgical” closely resembles “surgeon.”
The AMA has long called for action to protect patients from being misled by podiatrists using the title “surgeon” without a medical degree or surgical training.
