President’s Update: AMA and Pharmacy Guild Call for Urgent Action on Medicinal Cannabis

16 Oct 2025

This week, the AMA and the Pharmacy Guild jointly wrote to the Health Minister urging urgent action on medicinal cannabis. The organisations are calling for tighter regulation, ensuring cannabis products are overseen like any other high-risk medication. They support the TGA’s review of medicinal cannabis and advocate that products should be registered and assessed for efficacy and safety before being made available to patients.

Dr McMullen also highlighted work from the AMA’s Public Health Committee, focusing on:

  • Immunisation and addressing falling vaccination rates.

  • The forthcoming Women’s Health Position Statement, to be released on World Menopause Day, addressing gaps in care, perimenopause and menopause management, and risks for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and some cancers.

  • Queer health and the AMA’s participation in the 2026 Sydney Mardi Gras (Saturday, 28 February 2026).

Additionally, Dr McMullen attended a meeting advising the Department of Health’s primary care taskforce, aiming to consolidate last year’s five reviews into meaningful reforms supporting GPs and ensuring medical leadership in primary care.

Finally, she noted her participation in the Council of Doctors in Training meeting, which will discuss workforce pathways, the Medical Training Survey, and the pressures on doctors in training.
