One GP, Big Impact: Dr Jennie Wright Advocates for General Practice

04 Mar 2026

Dr Jennie Wright, a GP at Adelaide’s Bayside Family Medical and Musculoskeletal Practice, is showing how one GP can make a difference. Since the 2025 Federal Election, she has been advocating for patients and practices in her local electorate of Hindmarsh, represented by Health Minister Mark Butler.

Through the RACGP’s GP Advocate Network, Dr Wright meets with policymakers to raise issues such as payroll tax, aged care incentives, and bulk-billing. She believes small actions can add up.

“Sometimes saying the right thing to the right person at the right time can make a difference,” she says. “I can’t change everything, but I can speak up when a policy isn’t right.”

Dr Wright warns that fully universal bulk-billing, like in the UK, is not sustainable. Her solution: a “third income bracket” for the working poor, giving low-income families better access to bulk-billing without covering the wealthy.

She says advocacy is key to keeping practices viable, attracting doctors, and improving care. “Sharing information and working with decision-makers really can make general practice better,” she says.
