New Strategy to Strengthen Nurse Practitioner Workforce in Tasmania
02 Mar 2026
The strategy aims to strengthen the role nurse practitioners play in delivering essential healthcare to Tasmanians.
The strategy was shaped by public consultation, with feedback from stakeholders included in the final version. Responses showed strong support for the proposed direction and planned actions.
Nurse practitioners are highly skilled clinicians who can work independently in specialist or general practice settings. The new strategy outlines ways they can further improve access to care across the healthcare system.
It also presents a long-term vision to build a sustainable and effective nurse practitioner workforce. This includes improving practice support, reviewing legislation, and addressing cultural and system-level barriers that may limit their role.
An Implementation and Evaluation Plan will now be developed to guide how the strategy is rolled out. An advisory group will also be formed to oversee progress and ensure the strategy is delivered effectively.
In addition, scholarships are now available for registered nurses who want financial assistance to complete the required study to become endorsed nurse practitioners. Applications close on 22 March 2026.
