New Processes to Make Health and Medical Research More Inclusive
20 Nov 2025
Historically, factors such as sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics, or sexual orientation have often been overlooked in health and medical research, resulting in findings that do not fully represent the needs of all Australians. To address this, the NHMRC and MRFF are embedding these considerations into all grant processes from 2026.
From 1 January 2026, applicants for MRFF and NHMRC grants will be required to:
-
Consider sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics, and sexual orientation at every stage of their research project.
-
Explain how these factors were addressed in their grant applications.
A webinar to provide further guidance will be held on 21 November 2025.
