New GEM Unit Opens at Gold Coast University Hospital for Older Adults
10 Feb 2026
The unit is part of a network of services, including the Acute Cognitive Unit (ACU)/GEM Unit and the Complex Management Unit (CMU), which was relocated from Robina Hospital. Together, these services create a connected system of sub-acute care for older adults in the region.
Dr Ben Chen, Clinical Director of Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Community Services (RACCS), said the GEM Unit focuses on helping patients regain independence and plan the next stage of care.
“The unit is designed to support recovery and give older adults a space to rebuild confidence while staying close to family and carers,” he said.
The facility includes purpose-built rooms and family areas to create a calm, welcoming environment. Allied health teams work alongside nurses to provide care that addresses both medical needs and personal goals, ensuring patients are supported as a whole person.
Elizabeth Soleil-Moudiky-joh, Nurse Unit Manager, said the unit prioritises independence.
“Older adults don’t need us to take control—they need support to regain daily skills and confidence,” she said.
The GEM Unit is part of the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan and strengthens the hospital’s ability to manage sub-acute care, helping improve patient flow and ensure older adults receive the right care at the right time.
