The $76.9 million Sub-Acute Expansion, H Block, is set to officially open later this month.

H Block is a 70-bed facility designed specifically for people experiencing frailty, cognitive impairment, and behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). It brings together three connected services across three floors: two Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) units, a Complex Management Unit (CMU), and a new Acute Cognitive Unit (ACU).

The facility is designed to support recovery and improve patient outcomes, featuring therapeutic terraces, calming colour schemes, natural light, and a mix of single and double rooms tailored to the needs of older adults.

Importantly, H Block also helps relieve pressure on the broader health system, allowing clinicians to deliver structured, compassionate, and person-centred care in the right environment.

Dr Benjamin Chen, Clinical Director of Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Community Services, said H Block is a significant step forward in care for the ageing community.

“About 80,000 Queenslanders, including 11,000 on the Gold Coast, live with dementia, some with younger onset in their 30s, 40s or 50s. Many also live with frailty or cognitive and behavioural changes,” Dr Chen said.
“The environment here is light-filled, with therapeutic terraces and calming colour palettes. H Block shows that good environments support good care – we can’t stop patients from growing old, but we can do better in how we meet their needs.”

The facility is part of the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan and reflects Gold Coast Health’s commitment to helping older adults age well. Over 1,600 staff have been trained in dementia care ahead of H Block’s staged opening from 23 September 2025.

Gold Coast Health has also recruited new staff, increased graduate nurse intakes, and added a mid-year junior doctor program, working with university partners to ensure a well-prepared workforce.

Professor Cindy Shannon AM, Chair of the Gold Coast Health Board, said H Block provides a dedicated, purpose-built environment for older adults with complex needs.

“Every one of us is likely to be touched by dementia, whether it’s a loved one, colleague or ourselves. H Block ensures care is delivered in the right environment with the right resources, while also easing pressure across the health system,” Professor Shannon said.
