New ‘Calm Corner’ with Little Library Opens at Gold Coast University Hospital

Part of Gold Coast Health’s Creative Health Hub, the Calm Corner allows visitors to “take a book, leave a book, share a book” and forms part of broader initiatives that use arts and creativity to enhance wellbeing and health outcomes.
“This previously underused space, with its natural light and parkland views, felt like the perfect spot for the Calm Corner,” said Creative Health Project Officer Laura Strange. “It’s a space for staff, patients and visitors alike to pause, rest and reset.”
Located in the F Block walkway near Spiritual Care Services, the area features a rug with First Nations artwork and will soon include a donated painting from a local artist. Staff are encouraged to use the space as a calming breakout area.
Dr Dumindu Witharana, Inpatient Medical Director for Gold Coast Mental Health and Specialist Service, highlighted the importance of human-centred spaces in busy hospitals. “Small, thoughtful changes like the Calm Corner give patients, families and staff a chance to pause and feel supported, which can improve wellbeing and recovery,” he said.
The project builds on the success of the Book Nook at Robina Hospital and reflects evidence that creative environments in healthcare can reduce stress and anxiety, shorten hospital stays, and improve staff morale.
Gold Coast Health’s Creative Health Hub also runs live music, art exhibitions, murals, and workshops, with surveys showing that these initiatives make hospital experiences more positive for patients and staff alike.
The Calm Corner with Little Library is now open for all patients, visitors and staff at Gold Coast University Hospital.
