National Autism Strategy Reference Group Holds First Meeting

The group brings together community representatives, researchers, and government officials to ensure the voices of the Autistic and autism communities shape policy and programs.
The Reference Group, co-chaired by Chris Varney, includes eight community members and six representatives from relevant Commonwealth agencies. The first formal meeting was held on 23 February 2026, where the group discussed its role, priorities for the year ahead, and updates on the Strategy and Action Plan.

Appointments were made through a national Expression of Interest process, with consultation across peak bodies representing the autism and disability communities. The members reflect the diversity of the Autistic community, including priority groups identified in the Strategy.
The Reference Group will advise on implementing the Strategy and Action Plan and help evaluate their progress and impact over the coming years.
