Most Statin Side Effects Not Supported by Evidence

Only a few, such as muscle pain, increased diabetes risk, minor liver problems, urine changes, and tissue swelling, are supported by high-quality trials.

Researchers looked at 23 randomised trials involving over 1,000 participants and at least two years of treatment.

“Many symptoms people worry about — like memory loss, depression, headaches, fatigue, or weight gain — are not caused by statins,” said Associate Professor Christina Reith, lead author.

The study confirms that the benefits of statins in preventing heart attacks and strokes far outweigh the risks.

Professor Anthony Keech added that stopping statins without proper discussion with a doctor could prevent patients from getting the protection they need.

The researchers hope the findings will lead to updated drug labels and better patient information.
