Medical Colleges Set National Standard for Ethical Billing
05 Mar 2026
The framework sets standards for explaining costs, gaining informed financial consent, and applying compassionate billing for patients.
Launched by the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) at Parliament House, the framework makes it clear that informed financial consent must be documented in patient records before non-urgent treatment.
CPMC Chair Associate Professor Kerin Fielding said: “This is an unprecedented show of consensus across all colleges, sending a clear message about what is expected of medical practitioners.”
The framework supports enforcement against illegal billing and comes shortly after legislation requiring specialist fees to be listed on the Medical Costs Finder website.
