Measles alert issued for Sydney’s north west

19 Sep 2025

The person was infectious while at the following location:

Tuesday 16 September 2025

  • Umaya Restaurant, Level 2 Macquarie Shopping Centre
    11.30am – 1.15pm

Northern Sydney Local Health District Director of Public Health, Dr Michael Staff, said the venue does not pose an ongoing risk, but anyone who was there at that time should monitor for symptoms until Saturday 4 October 2025.

Symptoms to look out for

  • Fever

  • Sore eyes

  • Cough

  • A red, blotchy rash that usually appears 3–4 days after the initial symptoms, spreading from the head and neck to the body

“Measles is highly infectious and spreads through the air when an infectious person coughs or sneezes,” Dr Staff said.

He urged anyone who develops symptoms to call their GP or emergency department before attending, so precautions can be taken to avoid exposing others.

Vaccination reminder

  • Measles can be prevented with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

  • Two doses are recommended for everyone born in or after 1966.

  • The vaccine is free in NSW for children and adults who have not received both doses.

  • Children as young as six months can be vaccinated if travelling overseas.

“Checking your vaccination status is especially important before travelling, with measles outbreaks currently occurring in several parts of the world,” Dr Staff said.
