Measles Alert in Sydney’s Inner West

Measles Alert in Sydney’s Inner West

16 Feb 2026

These cases are linked to a traveller returning from South-East Asia, where outbreaks are ongoing. One person visited several public locations, including healthcare facilities, while infectious.

Symptoms to watch for include:

  • Fever

  • Runny nose

  • Cough

  • Red, blotchy rash (usually starts on the head and spreads)

  • Sore, red eyes

Symptoms can appear up to 18 days after exposure.

High-risk groups – pregnant people, infants, or those with weakened immune systems – who may have been exposed in the last six days should contact the Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055.

Vaccination advice:

  • Everyone born after 1965 should have two doses of the MMR vaccine

  • The vaccine is free for children at 12 and 18 months

  • Adults who haven’t had two doses can get vaccinated at GPs or participating pharmacies

Even if you haven’t visited the listed locations, see a doctor if you develop symptoms. Call ahead so you don’t risk exposing others.

For more details and updated exposure locations, visit the NSW Health website or the Australian Government Smart Traveller site for travel-related measles risks.
