Local GP Urges Community to Become ‘Immunisation Heroes’

Vaccines are safe, effective, and lifesaving, says Elderslie GP Dr Matthew Gray, as South Western Sydney PHN launches a campaign encouraging residents to become “immunisation heroes.”

“Vaccinations are one of the most effective and safest preventative measures available,” Dr Gray said. “They protect individuals and the community from serious illnesses that still exist, including measles, whooping cough, and meningitis.”

Dr Gray highlighted ongoing declines in childhood and adolescent vaccination coverage since the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that vaccine hesitancy has increased in recent years due to misinformation and post-pandemic fatigue. He emphasised that concerns about side effects are extremely rare and that vaccines safely provide immunity without the risks of natural infection.

Vaccination is important across all life stages, he said – from HPV and meningococcal vaccines for young adults to influenza and shingles vaccines for older or immunocompromised individuals. “Vaccines save lives and prevent outbreaks, protecting those who cannot be vaccinated,” Dr Gray explained.

He shared real-world examples from his work in emergency care and overseas, showing the serious consequences of preventable illnesses, while also noting the positive outcomes for vaccinated individuals who avoid illness and maintain their everyday activities.

Dr Gray encouraged community members to speak with their GP about vaccinations. “GPs play a crucial role in educating, administering vaccines, and reminding patients about what’s available and when,” he said.
