Launceston Paediatric Emergency Specialist shares her passion for caring for children

Her role ranges from leading critical resuscitations and treating newborns, through to managing complex emergencies for teenagers. She also works behind the scenes to improve care through safety initiatives, developing sepsis pathways, advocating for child-friendly spaces, and supporting staff with specialised training.
As a mother of two young boys, Dr McDonald says she understands the stress parents feel when bringing their child to hospital.
“I know what it feels like to worry about your kids, and that grounds me to care for their children with the same kindness and dedication I’d want for my own. A smile, some playfulness and kindness can go a long way in helping children and parents feel safe in a stressful moment,” she said.
Her reflections come as the world marks World Patient Safety Day on 17 September, which this year focuses on the theme “safe care for every newborn and every child.”
Dr McDonald says the work is always a team effort.
“I feel privileged when families entrust me with their child’s care, and I’d like to acknowledge the dedicated team at Launceston General Hospital who make this possible. Together, we want to keep building on our progress so every child can access safe, compassionate emergency care close to home,” she said.
