Landmark campaign to reduce stigma for trans and gender diverse Tasmanians

29 Sep 2025

The Unsaid Says A Lot campaign was officially launched at the inaugural LGBTIQA+ Champions Day in Campbell Town last week, with the initiative developed in partnership with the Victorian Government.

The campaign raises awareness of the everyday experiences of trans and gender diverse people, highlighting how non-verbal communication can reinforce stigma—or promote inclusion.

Dale Webster, Secretary of the Department of Health, said the initiative reflects the Department’s commitment to equality.
“This important campaign is supported through the Department of Health’s LGBTIQA+ Action Plan 2024–2027, which aims to reduce stigma, discrimination and minority stress while improving health outcomes for LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians,” he said.

Research shows more than three in four trans and gender diverse people report being treated unfairly because of their gender identity. This persistent stigma and exclusion has been linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicide across LGBTIQA+ communities.

The campaign demonstrates small, positive actions everyone can take to show allyship and help create a more inclusive community.

The Unsaid Says A Lot was co-designed by the Victorian Government, the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities and community organisations including Inclusive Rainbow Voices, Transgender Victoria, Transcend Australia and Zoe Belle Gender Collective. It was brought to life by Victorian-based director, actor, writer and producer Harvey Zielinski (he/him).

“Everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and equal,” Mr Webster said.
“This campaign shows that we all have a role to play in making Tasmania a more welcoming and inclusive state.”
