Keep Your Baby Safe: Get the RSV Vaccine in Pregnancy

17 Mar 2026

The vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program and recommended between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

RSV is a virus that can cause infections in the nose, throat, and lungs. While it often causes mild cold-like symptoms in adults, it can be severe for babies under six months, sometimes leading to bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

The vaccine works by creating antibodies in your body that pass through the placenta to your baby. This helps protect them when they are too young to build their own immunity, covering the first six months when they are most at risk. Maternal RSV vaccination reduces severe disease in infants under six months by around 70%, keeping thousands of babies out of hospital each year.

You can get the free RSV vaccine from your GP, midwife, obstetrician, participating pharmacy, community clinic, or Aboriginal health service.

Talk to your health provider and be an immunisation hero for your baby.
