Having a baby can be a wonderful experience.

However, there are many things which can happen to put mother and baby at risk.

Comprehensive and early antenatal care can have a positive effect on health outcomes for mothers and babies.

Current pregnancy care situation in South Western Sydney

Just 60.4 per cent of women (8,191 of 13,565 women) who gave birth in South Western Sydney in 2022 received antenatal care at least once during their first trimester, compared with the national average of 78 per cent.

In Bankstown, significantly fewer – 40. 5 per cent – pregnant women accessed antenatal care during their first trimester.

In 2022, only 40.5% of pregnant women in Bankstown Local Government Area accessed antenatal care during their first trimester

How can we do better?

South Western Sydney PHN’s latest round of Local Health Forums at venues in Bowral, Campbelltown and Bankstown in August and September, is focusing on what our region is doing well, and how we can do better when it comes to pregnancy care in South Western Sydney.

South Western Sydney PHN wants to:

  • better understand the experiences in pregnancy and birthing care provided in South Western Sydney
  • identify the barriers and enablers to accessing pregnancy care
  • explore the strengths and gaps in how primary and public health systems coordinate pregnancy care
