Introducing Dr Alicia Tucker, a leader in extreme environment medicine
02 Sep 2025
Tasmanian Doctor Recognised for Extreme Environment Medicine
Dr Alicia Tucker, Staff Specialist in the Emergency Department at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), has been named a Fellow of the Academy of Extreme Environment Medicine. This honour recognises her expertise in caring for people in places where medical support is hard to deliver due to extreme conditions.
Extreme environment medicine is about providing safe, effective care in remote or isolated locations with limited resources. It also helps people understand risks and prepare for challenging environments.
Dr Tucker says Tasmania is an ideal hub for this field, with close links to wilderness, rural, maritime, Antarctic, space, aviation, and underwater medicine.
Importantly, the lessons learned in these environments also improve everyday healthcare. Innovations in telehealth and virtual care, for example, were strengthened through managing the health of astronauts and Antarctic teams.
A proud Tasmanian and University of Tasmania graduate, Dr Tucker is now also a senior lecturer.
