How GPs Support New Parents’ Postnatal Mental Health
14 Oct 2025
Through regular check-ups and sensitive conversations, GPs can identify early signs of postnatal depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. They can provide initial support, refer patients to mental health specialists, counselling services, or local support groups, and prescribe treatment when appropriate.
By normalising discussions about mental health and offering compassionate care, GPs help reduce stigma and ensure parents receive timely help during this vulnerable period.
How GPs can support new parents:
-
Complete EPDS or K10 questionnaires during the postnatal period
-
Ask about the birth experience
-
Discuss the relationship with the baby
-
Explore current supports
-
Review other stressors or challenges affecting the parent
