The awards are given each year to acknowledge the skill, commitment and growth of doctors-in-training over the last 12 months.

2022 UTAS Rural Clinical School graduate and North West local Dr Austin Roberts was recognised as the 2023 Paul Huang Intern of the Year, which is given to the outstanding intern..

International Medical Graduate Dr Marli Capriles was recognised as the 2023 R.E.Butterfield Resident Medical Officer of the Year, which is given to the year’s standout junior doctor from Hospitals North West. 

The awards are an important opportunity to recognise those doctors who have made a particularly exceptional impact through their commitment to colleagues and patients.

All staff across Hospitals North West are able to nominate doctors-in-training they have worked with who demonstrate excellence in their practice.

This month, new interns have started across Tasmania and doctors-in-training with more than one year experience have moved onto their next rotations to continue their training journey.

Intern of the Year Award is presented in honour of Dr Paul Huang, who was a radiologist at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) for many years until his retirement in the early 1990s.

Resident Medical Officer Award is presented in honour of Dr Richard Butterfield, who was Executive Director Medical Services at the NWRH in the early 1990s.
