Hospitals Need More Than Promises
29 Jan 2026
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) says governments must stop arguing and focus on fixing hospital funding as talks continue on the next National Health Reform Agreement.
AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said record funding announcements often sound good but don’t reflect rising costs and demand.
“Healthcare is becoming more expensive every year, and more people need care,” she said.
The AMA estimates an extra $9.6 billion is needed just to keep hospitals running at today’s level. This would not increase services or reduce waiting lists.
Doctors are calling for larger funding increases and reforms that improve hospital capacity, reduce exit block, and prevent avoidable hospital admissions.
