Hospital in the Home: Caring for Patients Where They Feel Most Comfortable
16 Mar 2026
The service brings nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and allied health staff directly to patients’ homes, letting them receive treatment without staying in hospital.
Northern Tasmanian resident Allan said it’s much more comfortable and easier to ask questions about his care at home than in a hospital.
Patients usually get daily or twice-daily nurse visits and have access to doctors and allied health professionals virtually or in person. A 24-hour phone line ensures support is always available.
Dr Samantha Goss, a Hospital in the Home doctor, said visiting patients at home gives clinicians a full picture of their needs, from mobility and medication storage to what matters most in daily life.
After 18 months, the service is increasingly preferred by patients and helps hospitals free up beds for those who need them most.
