Hidden Violence: Reproductive Coercion in General Practice

04 Feb 2026

Monash University researcher Susan Saldanha hopes her studies will help shape clinical guidelines for GPs.

Reproductive coercion involves someone interfering with another person’s reproductive choices, either promoting or preventing pregnancy. It can range from threats and pressure to refusing or sabotaging contraception.

Studies show the problem is widespread. Around 1 in 20 Australian adults have experienced it, with 4.5% of women aged 43–48 reporting it in a 2025 study.

Ms Saldanha says GPs are responding carefully, ensuring patients are seen alone and finding creative ways to provide contraception or abortion care. The practice team often works together to protect patients.

She notes that cultural and religious factors can make responding more difficult, but hopes her research will guide better recognition and interventions in the future.
