GPs Trial Online Toolbox to Reduce Antibiotic Overuse
27 Mar 2026
The tool brings trusted resources together, making it easy to access during consultations.
The OPTIMAS-GP trial involves researchers from Monash University, the University of Wollongong, the University of Tasmania, and Bond University, as well as GPs and pharmacists.
“Prescribing more antibiotics than needed isn’t about lacking knowledge,” says Professor Andrew Bonney, GP and trial lead. “It’s about navigating tricky situations when patients are unwell and expect help.”
The toolbox includes clinical decision support tools, patient discussion guides, and advice on delayed prescribing—all in one place. Data collected helps GPs track their prescribing patterns and improve patient care.
The five-year trial will see GPs paid for participation. The first wave of 18 GPs has finished, with the second wave starting in July.
