GPs regain Medicare rebate for ECG tracing from March 2026
15 Jan 2026
From 1 March 2026, GPs can claim MBS item 11714 for a twelve-lead ECG trace when it informs clinical decision-making and is supported by a contemporaneous clinical note. The change reverses restrictions introduced in 2020 that limited the ability of general practice to provide this core diagnostic service.
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing confirmed the update alongside a $24 million investment to amend item descriptors, ensuring Medicare funding better reflects the clinical responsibility involved in delivering ECG services in general practice.
Under the revised arrangements, GPs can continue to refer patients for specialist reporting using items 11704 and 11705 when a formal report is required. Practices are advised to update billing software and brief staff on the descriptor changes ahead of the March start date.
The AMA says it will continue to work with the department on ECG rebates and broader Medicare reform.
