Future GPs to Train in Communities That Need Them Most

The RACGP also reported that 1,110 doctors applied for the program, showing high interest if more training spots and support are available.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said this focus on rural and regional areas is important:

“We want to make sure future GPs are trained where they’re needed most. For the second year running, all available training places have been filled thanks to strong government support.”

He added that interest in rural training is growing fast. Applications for rural placements have risen 45% this year and more than doubled since 2024. Dr Wright said continued investment is vital to meet community health needs, reduce reliance on overseas-trained doctors, and ensure long-term benefits from GP training programs.

The RACGP recently secured a $751.3 million, five-year AGPT Grant, which will fund the training of new GPs until at least 2030.
