Free Script Pharmacy Project: Funding to help people experiencing homelessness access medicine

Free Script Pharmacy Project: Funding to help people experiencing homelessness access medicine

19 Mar 2026

The project, led by the South Western Sydney Primary Health Network (SWSPHN), will provide support to approved not-for-profit organisations. Partnering with community pharmacies, these organisations can help eligible clients access standard Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medicines without paying out-of-pocket. The aim is to reduce barriers to medication, improve treatment continuity, and boost health outcomes across the region.

A total of $55,000 in funding will be shared across South Western Sydney’s seven local government areas (LGAs) — Bankstown, Campbelltown, Camden, Fairfield, Liverpool, Wingecarribee, and Wollondilly — with around $7,800 per service available.

Key details

  • Funding pool: $55,000

  • EOI opens: Thursday, 26 March 2026

  • EOI closes: Friday, 15 May 2026

  • Purpose: Support partnerships between approved organisations and community pharmacies to improve PBS medicine access for people experiencing homelessness

Who can apply

To submit an EOI, your organisation must:

  • Be a not-for-profit serving South Western Sydney, supporting people experiencing homelessness or at risk of it

  • Be approved under the Medication Program for Homeless People by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (DHDA)

  • Show capacity to work with one or more local community pharmacies to provide PBS medicines

Organisations not yet registered with the DHDA program are encouraged to start their application early, as processing can take up to 28 days.

About the Medication Program for Homeless People

This Australian Government program helps people who are homeless and unable to manage their own care access PBS medicines at no cost. Approved organisations assess client eligibility, and participating pharmacies dispense the medicines with the co-payment covered by the program.

Eligible clients must have a valid Medicare and concession card. Prescriptions are annotated with the organisation’s approval number before being filled by the pharmacy.

How to apply

An application form for funding will be available on the SWSPHN website from 26 March 2026. Organisations can also download guidelines and begin their DHDA Medication Program for Homeless People application ahead of time.
