Footscray Hospital Opens Its Doors to Melbourne’s West
18 Feb 2026
Located near central Footscray and next to Victoria University, the hospital combines health services, research, and teaching in one campus, and is run by Western Health.
The hospital offers:
-
A larger emergency department with a dedicated mental health, alcohol, and other drugs (AOD) hub.
-
Modern surgical and clinical spaces, including operating theatres, imaging, and procedural suites.
-
Facilities for teaching, training, and research to help train the next generation of health workers.
-
Improved access with new transport links and parking.
-
A design shaped by the community, with natural light, sustainable materials, and outdoor spaces, plus on-site cafés, pharmacy, health club, childcare, and shops.
Better care for more people
The hospital has space to expand and, when fully operational, will provide:
-
Over 500 inpatient beds
-
15,000 more patient treatments per year
-
20,000 extra emergency department visits annually
These upgrades aim to ease pressure on surrounding hospitals and reduce waiting times.
Focus on patient safety and innovation
The hospital’s mental health and AOD hub offers a calm environment and fast access to specialist care for patients experiencing these challenges.
Smooth transition
On 18 February 2026, up to 180 patients were safely moved to the new hospital. The move was carefully planned and rehearsed:
-
4,500 staff trained to use the hospital’s advanced technology
-
200+ specialised staff ran clinical simulation exercises
-
Over 400 patient care spaces prepared
-
A mock move in December 2025 ensured a seamless transition
Footscray Hospital is now one of Victoria’s biggest health projects and will provide safer, faster, and more accessible care to the growing population in Melbourne’s west.
