Experts Back Mandatory Health Star Ratings for All Packaged Foods
13 Feb 2026
The federal government has announced support for the reforms, with South Australia and Victoria backing them, and NSW and Queensland also reportedly in support.
AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said:
“This simple, front-of-pack label helps Australians make healthier food choices and is an evidence-based way to tackle diet-related diseases.”
Experts warn the voluntary system has reached its limits. Many products with low scores remain unlabelled, making it hard for families to know what’s healthy. Mandatory ratings would give clear, reliable information to all shoppers.
