Today is the first day of summer, which is a time of year hospitals and ambulance services can see an increase in demand for emergency and other types of care, as more people socialise and take part in outdoor activities.

Community-based health services such as Medicare Urgent Care Clinics (UCCs), afterhours GPs, pharmacies and Healthdirect are available and offer fast advice or treatment for non-emergency care needs without the need for a trip to the emergency department (ED).

There are two Medicare Urgent Care Clinics (UCCs) in Hobart and one in Launceston, offering bulk-billed healthcare for urgent health issues without the need for an appointment. A fourth clinic will also open in Devonport this month.

COVID@homeplus also continues to deliver round the clock virtual care for Tasmanians with respiratory illnesses including COVID-19, providing a valuable ongoing resource for Tasmanians, particularly given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases.

Tasmanians who have family, friends and loved ones in hospital are encouraged to be involved in their care by staying in touch with their treatment team and supporting discharge planning to enable patients to return home – where people generally recover better – when medically appropriate.

Department of Health Deputy Secretary Dale Webster encouraged Tasmanians to familiarise themselves with the available treatment options to make sure they get the right care, in the right place at the right time and help reduce pressure on busy EDs.

“Our hospitals and ambulance services can see surges in demand at this time of year as people participate in more social and outdoor activities, in addition to COVID-19 still circulating in the community.

“If you have an injury or illness and are not sure what to do, calling Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 to speak to a Registered Nurse is a great place to start.

“Healthdirect is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and can provide advice on whether you should manage your condition at home, book an appointment with a GP or need an alternative care option. 

“If you can’t wait for a regular appointment with a GP but don’t need emergency care, you can walk into one of our Medicare Urgent Care Clinics free of charge and without a booking. Other afterhours GP services are also available across the State.

“Community pharmacies can also provide advice and treatment for common ailments and illnesses, and many are open on evenings, weekends or public holidays.

“If you need emergency medical care for a serious injury or illness, you should call triple zero (000) or make your way to the nearest ED – our staff will be there for you.

“But if you go to the ED with a less urgent injury or illness, you may have to wait longer than you would with one of these more appropriate alternatives.”
