DVA releases quick guide for GPs treating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans
05 Feb 2026
The guide outlines relevant MBS and DVA item numbers for billing and includes an example of how these might apply over a year for a fictional patient. GPs are encouraged to use the guide to better understand billing options and support veterans’ access to care.
The DVA also reminds GPs to keep their service details up to date in the National Health Services Directory (NHSD), including contact information, opening hours, and services offered. Accurate listings help veterans and referrers locate services efficiently.
While there is no specific indicator on the NHSD for practices accepting Veteran Card holders, the DVA recommends GPs note this in the “service description” field when registering or updating their listing.
