Draft Revision of Launceston General Hospital Precinct Masterplan Released

Draft Revision of Launceston General Hospital Precinct Masterplan Released

24 Sep 2025

The original Masterplan was released in October 2021, with an Implementation Program following in March 2022. Since then, changes in the precinct have created new development opportunities.

Key updates in the 2025 draft revision include:

  • Inclusion of the Northern Health Complex, a seven-storey development providing up to 250 additional beds and opportunities for private investment, enabling a co-located private hospital on the LGH campus.

  • Planning for a new sub-acute and ambulatory care centre at 34–40 Howick Street, freeing up space on the main campus for acute services. The site will temporarily be used as a car park while a new multistorey car park is built.

  • Relocation of the Mental Health Precinct to 52 Frankland Street.

  • Construction of the Northern Heart Centre, supported by $120 million in funding from the Australian Government.

  • Expansion of the Emergency Department capacity.

  • Completion of a new helipad on the Cleveland Street multistorey car park (October 2024).

  • Use of the Allambi Building as the site for the Launceston Hospice, funded by the Australian Government.

  • Establishment of a four-bed intensive parenting service in the Launceston Health Hub, in partnership with Tresillian Family Care.

The draft Masterplan is now open for comment, with targeted consultation ongoing with key stakeholders. Following this engagement, the final 2025 Masterplan Revision and an updated Implementation Program will be released.
